Digestive system dependence on other systems

All of the body's systems rely on eachother to perform their specific functions. The Digestive system provides quite a few other systems with energy and nutrients, but what exactly does the digestive system rely on? There are two main systems that provide this system with what it needs to work. These systems are the muscular system and the nervous system. The muscular system is very important in making this system function properly. In order to make the food molecules move through the whole system, the muscles contract, called peristalsis. The stomach and intestines are both made of muscles. When the food molecule need to move through the system, these muscular organs squeeze and contract which makes the food progress. In order for these muscles to contract, there needs to be something that sets it off. This is where the nervous system comes into play. As the Digestive system provides energy, this energy is used to send signals throughout the body to muscles telling them when to contract and extend. This is how peristalsis occurs; the signals from the brain are sent to these muscles, thus moving the food forward. These systems are very important in keeping the digestive system maintaining homeostasis.
