The Human Body System
Functions of Organs
Mouth - This is the beginning of the DIgestive system. When food enters the mouth, it is broken down by chewing and mixing with saliva. This makes the food into smaller pieces and makes it easier for it to go down the esophagus and into the somach.
Esophagus - It is a pathway for you food to go from your mouth to your stomach. This is made possible through involuntary muscle contractions.
Stomach - A hollow organ that is responsible for breaking down most of the food. As the food is stored in it, it mixes with digestive enzymes that break down the food. Again this is made possible through involuntary muscle contractions. The lining of the stomach is covered with a very acidic solution which also helps to break down the food.
Small Intestine - After the food is broken down in the stomach, enters into the small intestine. As it is broken down into three sections, the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum, each section breaks down the food even more through digestive enzymes. These enzymes are released by the pancreas. While the duedenum mostly breaks down the food, the ileum and the jejunum have different responsibilities. They absorb all of the valuable nutrients from the food into the blood stream. The food coming into the small intestine is not completely liquid, but when it is finished going through the 22 foot lont tube, it is liquidized.
Large Intestine - The main function of this organ is to make the stool easy and affective to empty out. The waste product from the small intestine is emptied into the large intestine by involuntary muscle contractions or paristalsis. It is stored there for approximately 36 hours before a mass movement and releasing into the rectum.
Anus - This is the last part of the digestive system. It controls the stool that moves out of the body. It is always tightly contracted unless stool comes into the rectum. The muscles then relax and the stool can be released.
Liver - This organ is very improtant within the body. It processes the needed nutrients for the body to function. The nutrients processed come from the small intestine. The liver also has other functions like digesting fats and taking out potant chemicals fromt the blood.
Pancreas - This is the organ that is responsible for making the digestive enzymes needed for the breaking down of food. The pancreas also has another important function; creating insulin. Insulin is put directly into the bloodstream and is used for metabloizing sugars.
Gallblatter - This organ stores and created a type of liquid called bile. This is secreted into the duodenum and is responsible for breaking down and absorbing many fats. Bile is also found in the liver and is used for the same purpose.
